Mark
Lawrence, Chairman of the Lakeland Economic Design Committee, presented an Overview
of Economic Development in Lakeland and the Opportunities it Affords its'
Businesses. It was informative, positive and helpful to many that are
learning the ropes of Lakeland. THANK YOU MARK!


Fall 2004 Luncheon Overview of Presentation by Mark Lawrence, Chairman of the
Economic Development Commission in Lakeland.
Mark stated the Lakeland EDC currently works the business aspects of the
city. He hopes in the future that The Chamber will revitalize and work
together with the EDC, and eventually lead the business aspects of the
city. He stated that the Lakeland businesses are the lifeblood of the
community, which in turn, enables the city to have no property taxes for
residents, but services to support its' residents.
1) Canada Road Widening
 | will be complete by 2005 |
 | there will be no interruption of traffic while widening is underway |
 | boulevard concept with a 30' center (like E. Parkway in Midtown) |
 | 2 lanes each way, plus turnouts |
 | projected: in 5 years there will be 60-70,000 cars per day from Hwy
64 to I-40 |
2) Annexation Vote
 | vote will be held 12/7/2004 |
 | if approved, there will be an added 1/3 of geographic area to Lakeland |
 | encompasses Hwy 70 to Pleasant Ridge Road |
3) Lakeland Village
 | Belz property south of the mall |
 | 126 acres of mixed use proposal
 | -215,000 sq ft commercial (70,000 sq ft for one large business) |
 | -375,000 sq ft residential units from estate to possible town homes |
